The foreign Minister for Ghana – Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had revealed that the US is in support with Ghana to extradite Ken Ofori Atta and Sedinam Tamakloe Attionu from their country to come face trials on their corruption-related offences. The disclosure which occurred on 13th January, 2026 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs domicile, was informed during a comprehensive assessment discussion between the Minister and the Acting US Ambassador – Rolf Olson and his team, on Ghana-US Bilateral Relations and the Agreements priority areas of Cooperation to be achieved in 2026.

The engagement that led to a significant review of progresses made in 2025 also, brought a successful negotiation of Ghana to be exempted from US visa sanctions like the $15,000 visa bonds imposed on other countries. Again, the discussion centered on satisfaction with implementation of the removal of 15% tariff by Donald Trump regarding unprocessed and semi-processed agricultural products from Ghana. Moreover, through a transparent vote of 340:54 between the House of Representatives, It was conveyed that African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) will provide duty-free access to US market for eligible Sub-Saharan countries and their products will also be patronized. In which, Ghana awaits final endorsement from the Senate on this agreement as well. This positive development by Ablakwa, will boost local garment production and create more jobs in Ghana.
On the other Hand, World Cup Preparations regarding issuance of VISAS on time was also communicated; where, measures are in place to ensure that applicants receive or secure their visas on the appointed time given without delay.
Finally, the Minister addressed that, the engagement between him and the Acting US Ambassador, confirms recent payments to US companies and that, it has enhanced business climate to be excellent in terms of stronger Ghana-US trade. As such, new major health cooperation will soon be launched, with a bespoke trade agreement negotiations that will yield mutual benefit for the countries – Ghana and USA.
