UNIVERSITY OF MINES AND TECHNOLOGY (UMaT) HONOURS IBRAHIM MAHAMA WITH DOCTORATE DEGREE

The University of Mines and Technology (UmaT) in the Western Region of Ghana – Tarkwa, on 31st January, 2026, awarded a Doctorate Degree to Ibrahim Mahama, a Ghanaian businessman who doubles as Chief Executive Officer of Engineers and Planners Company Limited (E&P) and a brother to His Excellency John Dramani Mahama; for the recognition of his distinguished contributions to the mining industry and his philanthropic activities. The event which was the highlight of the UMat’s 18th Special Congregation Ceremony had in attendance the President – John Dramani Mahama and former President – John Agyekum Kufuor (Chancellor of UMaT).

At the event, Vice Chancellor of UMat – Prof. Richard Kwasi Amankwah gave a rational speech behind the recognition of honoring Ibrahim Mahama. Where he stressed that, Ibrahim has always been a type of person who makes impactful contributions in building sectors and has also been creating enormous innovation and technology with his Engineers and Planners under the mining firm, yielding numerous jobs among people to earn a living. As such, the honour is to motivate him and his good works, to relentlessly do exceedingly.

John Dramani Mahama on the other hand, also lauded Ibrahim’s remarkable contributions towards Ghana’s mining sector and celebrated his journey as fulfilling; where, he shared some childhood fascination about him and his love for machineries into becoming one of the leading Africa’s indigenous mining entrepreneurs we have in Ghana, today. In his address, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama alluded that Ibrahim, from childhood can dismantle toys bought for them by their Dad, just to know how these toys function, especially during their Father’s absence, and that curiosities moulded him into being innovative and achieving the greater heights, we witnessed, today.

Furthermore, His Excellency added that, the Ibrahim we see now can move heavy earth equipment into an incredible use due to his dedication to learn hard and also to build success through integrity and resilience. As such, the achievement circled around him and his company, are as a result of his own dedication, discipline and hardwork as an entrepreneur to withstand challenges, but thrive through. “His poised to launch Ghana’s first 100% indigenous owned gold mine sent a message that, excellence, enterprise and giving back, goes hand in hand” he emphasized”.

Finally, John Dramani Mahama praised UMat for honouring Ibrahim, congratulated the class of 2025, pledged hope for Ghana’s ongoing growth and prosperity and also reminded the students and graduates that, education is both a privilege and a responsibility. Therefore, their degrees are not just a certificate but a tool to also build Ghana as a nation. “Be bold, discipline and ethical in all you do”, he urged.
