XENOPHOBIC ATTACK IN SOUTH AFRICA: OKUDZETO BRINGS BACK HOME NATIONALS

Ghana’s Foreign Minister – Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa had evacuated first batch of Ghanaians which were said to be 300, from South Africa to Ghana as at 27th May, 2026. The minister made this effort on evacuation of Ghanaians from South Africa because, Ghanaians were seen in videos and pictures been physically attacked to leave the country and go fix theirs. These images and clips circulated all over the media of which the nationals were told forcefully to leave South Africa – (A march and march movement led by Jacinta Ngobese-Zuma). Ablakwa upon witnessing these inhumane acts exhibited, decided to work hard and bring back home its nationals.

Before this, the minister also already informed that the government of Ghana has noted more than 800 Ghanaians to have registered with Ghana’s High Commissioner in Petoria seeking for evacuation due to the latest wave of xenophobic attacks on them in South Africa; which had called for this swift response as well.

He mentioned that considering the numbers involved and South African legal conditions that was to be met including mandatory passenger screening, multi-institutional coordination and flight permits, even the earlier planned evacuation was deferred to few days. But the hardworking government who cares for its citizens ensured to assist the High Commissioner to meet these evacuation conditions and truly, it has been fulfilled.

Also, as a result of this incident, the Ghanaian government has taken upon himself to enhance more efficient pre-evacuation modalities in order to expedite processes if the need be, someday.

Again, when these nationals arrived in Ghana yesterday, NADMO, Foreign Ministry officials, bloggers, journalists, some Ghanaians happily also welcomed them at the Accra International Airport; where they were all seen been given wrapped packages including transportation money, upkeep money, groceries, dresses, beverages, and about 5000cedis each allocated and distributed to these nationals who came yesterday.

Most Ghanaians witnessing this kind gesture has thus, applauded the Foreign Minister and government for a good work done and for genuinely looking out for its nationals during this crisis. They asserted that, Ghanaians should also learn to appreciate their homeland and must ensure to live and build in their homes than always traveling to foreign countries, uninvited. We can also make it in our country. We must stop going into these countries all in the name of seeking for greener pastures. Appreciate your home and live in it, said a national.”

Meanwhile, the Minister has also assured that the remaining over 500 Ghanaians will also be brought back home safely with same treatment.
